'Cut-Out, Holey Text'

Intro:

The effect below is a very simple yet effective way of 'jazzing-up' text that otherwise would look plain. Its very easy to do and looks cool and eye-catching; very good for logos:

Step 1:

First of all, choose a background colour and canvass size. Once complete, create the text that you want to add the effect to and add any formatting that you want the text to have. (Try to use a broad, bold font; this will make the text more legible when the effect is added.) For the example, I have chosen 'Impact', and the text 'paultyers.co.uk'.

Step 2:

When you have completed Step 1, select the text using the 'Arrow Tool', (the black arrow), and choose: Modify => Break Apart. Do this twice, so that when selected, only the letter you chose is selected and is compiled of 'dots':

Step 3:

Now select the 'Lasso Tool' from the tools bar, (above the text icon). What you have to do now is select small parts of the text that you have broken apart and press delete. This will delete the area of text that you chose, creating 'holes' in the text and letting the background view through the text. (Try to make the 'holes' random to give a greater effect). This is best done when just viewing the text itself, so choose 'Show All'.

Step 4:

Once Step 4 is complete, use the ink-bottle tool to add a line around the text, making it stand out that little bit more. Now press Alt+ Enter to view the movie. The effect is now complete.

Tips:

• If you create a simple shape and add a colour change and place it behind the text on a separate layer, it will shine through the holes in the text.
• The effect is very good for logos and banners at the top of a page.
• Try text morphing the text into the same text without the holes.
