I figured this out when I was doing the glint tutorial by Beyond_Style.
Step 1
First off make a new movie with a background colour of your choice, I chose black for this because it seems more suitable, but any background will do. Name the first layer "Text" or something else if you want.
Now click the text tool on the toolbar (T) and type in your text.
(Colour does'nt matter, you wont see it anyway.)
Step 2
Create a layer named "Colour/Effect".
Now to create the effect for your text. Click the rectangle tool(R), make sure you have outline as no colour. The rectangle should be taller than your text and almost twice as wide. Select the rectangle you just made and find the fill panel, from the drop-down menu select linear gradient.
On the bar make it go from gray-white-gray so that the white portion is small compared to the rest.
Step 3
Now let's make put the effect into action. Make sure the text layer is above the colour/effect layer. Now right-click the text layer and select "mask".now move the rectangle to the left so that it is'nt covering the text, make a keyframe around frame 35 and move the rectangle to the right so that it is'nt covering the text. Right-click frame 1 and select "Create motion tween". Voila, that covers the tutorial. Hope it helped!
